15-year-old ‘shot dead in the street’ walking to McDonald’s after movie, Florida cops say

A 15-year-old girl was walking to McDonald’s after seeing a movie when she was shot during an attempted robbery, Florida officials said.

She has been identified as Kayla Rincon-Miller, according to the Cape Coral Police Department.

“It should strike a nerve that a young, vibrant 15-year-old girl was shot dead in the street,” Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore said in a news conference the day after the shooting.

Rincon-Miller saw a movie the evening of Sunday, March 17, and went to get food afterward with two other girls, Sizemore said.

As they were making the roughly 16-minute walk to the McDonald’s from the movie theater, a car pulled up on them and blinded the girls with the headlights, one witness told police.

Someone got out of the car and tried to rob them, police said. One person opened fire, striking Rincon-Miller in the chest, and the vehicle fled the scene, according to investigators.

By the time police arrived shortly before 10 p.m., Rincon-Miller was still conscious and was able to tell investigators she didn’t know the shooter, Sizemore said. The other girls, who were both minors, told officers they didn’t know the person either.

First responders applied a chest pack and performed CPR until Rincon-Miller was taken to a hospital, where she died of her injuries, Sizemore said.

Investigators are asking the public to come forward with any information, including tips and video footage from the area. Detectives have been speaking with neighbors and businesses in the area to identify those involved.

As Sizemore stood alone behind the podium, he said he would normally be surrounded by detectives, but the case requires “all hands on deck,” he said.

Police said the girls were local to the area but didn’t share where they went to school.

In a tribute on Facebook, a family member said Rincon-Miller had a “beautiful smile and a beautiful soul.”

Cape Coral is on the Gulf Coast, about a 40-mile drive north of Naples.
