Art: Sir Kyffin Williams letters fetch almost £6,000 at auction

An archive of 30 letters from painter Sir Kyffin Williams to friends has sold at auction for £5,800.

Many of the missives included doodles and drawings and were mostly between himself, Annwen Carey-Evans and her husband Bengy Carey-Evans.

The estimate was £5,000 to £7,000 and they span the artist's last 20 years.

They bemoan the lack of a Welsh national gallery and express dislike for Damien Hurst and Tracey Emin exhibitions.

The documents also question how art could flourish in Wales when "people qualify on the golf course".

His works show mountains, valleys, farmland and grey skies over Wales.

They are in galleries across the UK and in a permanent exhibition on Anglesey, which he called home.

Previously, auctioneer Ben Rogers Jones said: "He was Wales' favourite artist.

"He may not have been the critics' favourite, but does that matter?"

Mr Rogers Jones said the letters gave a glimpse into a deep friendship, describing Annwen and Bengy Carey-Evans as "quite paternal" towards Sir Kyffin.
