Drink driver jailed for killing scooter rider
A speeding drink driver who crashed into a scooter rider, fatally injuring him, has been jailed.
Callum Carew hit the back of 29-year-old Razvan Brumar's scooter on the A534 Wheelock bypass near Crewe in March last year.
Carew, who had been travelling at an average speed of 104mph in his BMW M2 prior to the collision, admitted causing death by dangerous driving while over the drink drive limit.
The 34-year-old from Crewe was sentenced to nine years and four months in prison at Chester Crown Court.
Mr Brumar, from Crewe, was thrown from his scooter in the late night crash, and died in hospital a short time later.
At the point of impact, Carew's BMW, was travelling at between 66mph and 81mph, said Cheshire Police.
A passenger in his car told officers he had reached up to 140mph on the single carriageway 60mph road, and continued to speed prior to the crash.
Carew, of Rochester Crescent, had tried to claim he had only had one pint, and that Mr Razvan's bike had no lights, said police.
When tested in custody, Carew had a reading of 93 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath -more than two times the legal limit.
In tribute, Mr Brumar's family said: “Razvan’s death caused in such violent conditions have caused boundless pain in our hearts, we are all devastated.
"Razvan was a healthy young man, full of life and eager to build a beautiful future. He had a warm nature, he was a very happy person, always smiling and making his friends laugh.
"He was always such a positive person and was so attached to his family.”
Sgt Andrew Dennison added: "That night Carew chose to deliberately ignore those rules, not only did he get behind the wheel while drunk, but he then went out and drove at excessive speeds, for no other reason other than to show off to his passenger, and showing absolutely no regard for the safety of other motorists.
"Sadly, as a result of the selfish actions taken by Carew, an innocent man lost his life."
