New fitness studio plans to open in Elk Grove this May. What is it and where will it be?

A new fitness center is expected to open in Elk Grove this spring.

According to the city permit application, and confirmed by the business’s website, a BodyBar Pilates studio is coming soon to Elk Grove. It will open at in a shopping center just east of Highway 99, at 8547 Elk Grove Blvd.

Although there is no specific information about an official opening date, owner of the eventual Elk Grove location Nick Maltbie said he expects the fitness studio to open in mid-May.

“We are super excited to be opening in May and really looking forward to it,” Maltbie said. “And I’m hoping sooner than later, let’s put it that way.”

BodyBar Pilates is a franchise based out of Fort Worth, Texas, Maltbie said.

The purpose and mission of BodyBar Pilates, according to its website, is to help individuals discover physical potential through effective Pilates workouts, improve overall well-being and “cultivate a balanced, athletic, and real community.”

Maltbie said the studio will offer two different types of classes.

“One type of class will be a little more athletic,” Maltbie said. “It would be more of a higher intensity, athletic type of class versus your traditional Pilates classes…and we’ll also offer classes that are more consistent with what most people would consider to be a Pilates workout: a stretch (class), balance class or a classic class. Things like that that we can open up to a large population of people.”

Maltbie applied for BodyBar Pilates’ business permit in November 2023. It was approved and issued earlier this month.

What was there before BodyBar?

The previous tenant to lease the location was the Shaolin Temple Kung Fu Zen Academy.

Shaolin Temple Kung Fu Zen Academy owner Maichua Ding told The Sacramento Bee that it moved from Elk Grove to Sacramento in December 2023. It’s located at 4693 Mack Road.

Ding said business at the new location is good. She told The Sacramento Bee that they moved their martial arts dojo to Sacramento because the lease in Elk Grove was too expensive.
