‘Huge’ venomous snake slithers by as kid grabs toys in Australia. ‘Look at the size’

If you’re a child born in Australia, you learn how to look out for yourself early.

Whether it’s to keep an eye out for spiders on the walls or snakes under the bed, Australian youngsters are always prepared for whatever dangerous or venomous creature might be lurking around the corner.

The Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers were called out to a Maroochydore home when one of these hazardous animals decided to make a home in a child’s toy basket.

In a video posted May 1 on TikTok, a mother told the snake catcher that her child had reached into a basket in her room and something had moved.

When the catcher took a closer look, the scaly body of a snake was slithering around the basket, between the toys and dolls, the video shows.

“Oh my goodness,” the snake catcher says upon seeing the snake. “Look at the size of it! That is insane.”

Nestled into the basket was a red-bellied black snake, the catcher said, a highly venomous snake.

“This is one of the wildest jobs we have done!” the catcher said on TikTok.

The snake catcher said it was lucky no one was bitten when reaching into the toy basket, according to the video.

“This is a big snake, huge,” the snake catcher said. “That is an extremely healthy red-belly.”

The snake was carefully pulled out of the basket and placed in a bag to be relocated, according to the video.

Though the mother, heard in the background of the video, had appreciation for the beauty of the venomous snake, others in the comment section did not.

“That’s one big nope rope,” one commenter said.

“That’s when my house goes on the market,” another wrote.

Red-bellied black snakes can grow to about 6 feet long with a solid black body except for the smooth red scales along the bottom, earning its name, according to the Australian Museum.

They are found primarily on the east coast of Australia, and are generally common to encounter despite their potential danger, the museum says.

While not enough to kill an adult, a bite from a red-bellied black snake for a child could carry a serious, sometimes fatal risk, the museum says.

Maroochydore is on the east coast of Australia, about a 70-mile drive north of Brisbane.
