Housing Stimulus Package to Stabilize Neighborhoods, Attract New Capital to Communities: LISC Sat Jul 26, 1:24 PM ET
The Housing and Economic
Recovery Act of 2008 will help stabilize disinvested neighborhoods, offer
relief to families stung by the foreclosure crisis and attract new capital to
affordable housing developments that address the needs of low-income renters
and homeowners, according to Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), the
national nonprofit force behind comprehensive community development. LISC has
raised nearly $9 billion to help revitalize distressed communities across the
country.

for the City of Houston, and Okianer Christian Dark, Associate Dean for

lead the second leg of a five-city investigation on the state of fair housing
in America, with a focus on the post-Katrina and Rita housing crisis in the

Traceback Is Not the Problem in Salmonella Saintpaul Outbreak Fri Jul 25, 7:42 PM ET
On June 7, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a consumer alert directing the nation to stop consuming certain types of tomatoes. To this date, the federal agency has not announced an end to the investigation or the source of the contamination. On June 27, the agency admitted that tomatoes may not have been responsible for the outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul and said instead they were keeping an open mind about other commodities being responsible for the outbreak. Spokespersons for the FDA and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have cited difficulty tracing product consumed by those who became ill back through the supply chain, and a number of consumer groups have used these statements to dust off their calls for the federal government to require an electronic traceback system.

The Department of Justice announced today a settlement agreement with the Education Management Corporation (EDMC) under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). EDMC is a for-profit business that provides education and training and is one of the largest providers of private post-secondary education (primarily career-focused education) in North America. The agreement covers 19 Brown Mackie campuses, which are operated by EDMC and located in Ohio, Kentucky, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Arizona and Oklahoma. Under the agreement, EDMC will make these campuses more accessible to individuals with disabilities by removing architectural barriers.
