Lorry ablaze on M56 as crews tackle 'thick smoke'

Part of the M56 has been closed due to a "large" lorry fire.

Fire crews were called to the eastbound side of the M56 near Frodsham, Cheshire following reports of a blaze at about 19:38 BST.

Two fire engines were at the scene of the fire on the hard shoulder between junctions 14 (Hapsford) and 12 (Runcorn), and were working to control "a significant amount of smoke".

National Highways said both the eastbound and westbound side of the carriage was closed.

A National Highways spokesman said: "Fire crews continue to work at the scene and traffic caught within the closure is in the process of being turned around."

Traffic on both carriageways was being diverted.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "The fire is causing a significant amount of thick smoke and crews have requested that both carriageways be closed while they deal with the incident."

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were using hose reel water jets to tackle the blaze.

Police and ambulance services were also at the scene. It had not been confirmed if there were any casualties.

North West Motorway Police said drivers should remain in their vehicles on a social media post.

Motorists intending to travel had been advised to avoid the area.
