Police investigating a serious accident have begun work to reopen a major route through North Yorkshire.

The A1(M) southbound from Junction 48 (Boroughbridge) to Junction 47 (Allerton Park) was closed because of an accident at around 02:15 BST.

North Yorkshire Police has not released details of the collision, but said a "significant amount of debris" needed to be cleared from the carriageway.

The force said it hoped the road would reopen later this afternoon.

A spokesperson said: "We are now working with the Highways Agency to clear the significant amount of debris and oil which is on the road.

"We're hoping that the southbound carriageway will be open for this evening's rush hour and thank motorists for their patience whilst we deal with this incident."

The northbound carriageway was also partially closed for a time but reopened earlier on Wednesday.

National Highways warned drivers were facing delays southbound of about 60 minutes.
