A tip which has been closed for more than a month could be partially reopened.

Work has been taking place to find a way to partially open Wombourne Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) again after it shut for safety reasons.

Staffordshire County Council said subsidence was discovered on an internal road at the site, which meant it was unsafe for the public.

Experts have been on-site examining the situation and hope to have a definitive answer soon, they added.

Simon Tagg, cabinet member for environment, said: “We’re keen to partially reopen the site if we’re able to though, of course, public safety comes first.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience: since the closure we’ve been working hard to find solutions – and we’re still looking at some other options.”

The authority said people can take household waste to Bilbrook HWRC, which is 10 miles away, while the Wombourne site is closed.
