Three in custody after smuggling boat drops migrants at Haulover Beach, agents say

Three people are in federal custody after a smuggling boat dropped off a group of migrants on Haulover Beach on Thursday night, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations.

The boat arrived about 5:40 p.m. in the area of 10800 Collins Avenue, at the Haulover Inlet just north of Bal Harbour.

Nestor Yglesias, a Homeland Security Investigations spokesman, said the boat captain is among the detained, but he has not been charged as of Friday evening.

Two others, citizens of the Dominican Republic, are facing charges of illegal entry after having previously been deported, Yglesias said. Their names have not been released yet.

Federal agents believe there were a total of 10 people on board, but that has not been confirmed because the others who arrived on the vessel have not been caught, Yglesias said.
