Video shows rough arrest of California armed robbery suspect; deputy on leave

A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy is on administrative leave after video surfaced of a use-of-force arrest on an armed robbery suspect in Hesperia earlier this week.

Events leading to the arrest began on Sunday when deputies were called to an armed robbery in the 16000 block of Main Street, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release Wednesday.

Investigators later identified 36-year-old Adelanto resident Christian Cardenas Alonso as a suspect in the case.

Alonso is a convicted felon and an active criminal street gang member, according to the news release.

On Tuesday, deputies located Alonso near the intersection of Main Street and E Avenue.

“The investigators initiated a traffic stop and contacted Alonso who refused to exit his vehicle. Alonso resisted arrest and a use of force occurred,” the Sheriff’s Department stated.

Cellphone video of the arrest recorded by @jesseloc and shared with KTLA via Instagram showed three members of law enforcement holding Alonso down during a struggle as a fourth landed several knees to his head and multiple punches to his face.

“I have been made aware of the use of force that occurred during the arrest of a suspected armed robbery suspect. The use of force is currently under investigation, which includes the review of all body-worn cameras,” Sheriff Shannon Dicus said. “The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”

During a search of Alonso’s vehicle, deputies said they found property belonging to the robbery victim inside the trunk.

A search warrant was then served at Alonso’s business, Califa Tattoo, located in the 16000 block of Main Street.

“Investigators recovered a firearm, ammunition, and gang indicia from inside Alonso’s business,” the Sheriff’s Department stated.

Several known street gang members also attempted to flee out the back door during the search of the business, according to the news release.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the investigation into Alonso’s arrest.
