Shots fired at Sheffield property while children asleep inside - police
An investigation has been launched after "multiple" gunshots were fired at a property in Sheffield while children were asleep inside, police have said.
Firearms officers were deployed to Gresley Road, in Lowedges, at about 22:40 BST on Wednesday.
No injuries were reported but "evidence consistent with a firearms discharge" was found outside one address, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.
Det Ch Insp Anthony Slater said it was a "terrifying and worrying incident".
"We are putting lots of resources into piecing together the circumstances of this incident and finding the person responsible for pulling the trigger," he added.
"What makes this incident even more shocking is that when the shots were fired, multiple children under the age of 10 were asleep inside the property.
"To think that innocent children could have been caught in the crossfire of this is beyond our comprehension."
The family living at the targeted property had been offered support by police, a force spokesperson said.
Det Ch Insp Slater appealed for anyone with information about what happened to get in touch.
"We are particularly keen to hear from anyone in the Gresley Road area who may have seen someone or people in the area at the time, or anyone with relevant doorbell, CCTV or dashcam footage from around the time of the incident that might help us progress our inquiries."
There would be increased patrols in the area over the next few days, South Yorkshire Police said.
