Two 16-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after a fire broke out at a derelict school in Birmingham.

The old Clifton Road school buildings in Balsall Heath were badly damaged in the blaze, which started at about 14:00 BST on Monday.

The next-door St Paul's school was also evacuated, and said it was arranging an alternative site for lessons while the neighbouring building was assessed.

Police said nobody was injured and the two boys had been released on bail while officers continue inquiries.

The BBC has approached the city council for further information on the state of the building, with signs suggesting it may require demolition.

Nikki Hemming, co-head of the new Clifton Primary School, which is around the corner from the old building, said it was "heartbreaking" to see the burnt-out shell.

"Initially when I saw it [the flames], the roof seemed ok, but it quickly deteriorated and it was such a sad sight," she said.

Ms Hemming, who began her teaching career in the old building said it had once been beautiful inside, with many Victorian fittings.

She described it as a loss for the whole community.
