Biodiversity project begins in market town
Work has started on a nature project aiming to increase biodiversity and wildlife in Gainsborough.
The project, run by the Together charity, follows a £70,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
On Sunday, volunteers started by planting wildflower seeds, native trees and hedges on the Thorndike Way approach to the roundabout with Trinity Street and Ashcroft Road.
Efforts to transform the site will continue over the next 18 months.
Mary Hollis, project manager, said: “Over the last few decades we have lost so much of our native wildlife.
"Any spaces where we can help to recreate habitats or make new habitats just to give nature a helping hand is really important.”
Councillor Trevor Young, West Lindsey District Council leader, said: “I believe it will greatly enhance the South West ward, one of the most deprived areas in the country.
“Not only will it greatly improve biodiversity, but it will also provide local people with some much-needed green space to enjoy.”
