Council vows to clear 'disgusting' green algae
A council has promised to deal with an algal bloom in Skegness boating lake.
Some local people complained it looked "absolutely disgusting" and smelled "awful".
East Lindsey District Council (ELDC) said it would treat the algae with a non-toxic chemical.
A spokesperson said they could not give a timeline of when the algae would be fully cleared.
'Smells awful'
Pictures of the southern end of Skegness boating lake were circulating online, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, with users criticising the layer of green scum, known as algal bloom.
The water was described as “absolutely disgusting”.
Skegness resident Pete Hepworth said: "It seems as if everything south of the Clock Tower has been written off and abandoned.”
Lee Airstone added: “I’ve been past today and it smells awful. It was only refilled a few months ago. They need to maintain the water.”
'Chemical dosing'
Responding to the criticism, a spokesperson for ELDC said: “The council will be treating this algal bloom with a non-toxic chemical dosing.
"Once we have distributed the dose, it may take a few days to fully eradicate the algae.
“At present we can’t confirm a timeline in which works will be successful as consideration needs to be made for weather, water temperature, amount of bacteria present in the water, and many other factors.”
