Restless Natives actor Vincent Friell dies aged 64

The Scottish actor Vincent Friell, who starred in the cult classic film Restless Natives, has died aged 64.

The news was announced by his agent.

In addition to his starring role in the 1985 comedy, the Glasgow native also appeared in Trainspotting, The Angel's Share and TV shows including Still Game and Rab C Nesbitt.

Film director Carter Ferguson, who worked with Friell on the romantic comedy Fast Romance, described him on social media as "a lovely, funny, talented guy."

Rab C. Nesbitt creator Ian Pattison remembered his appearance on the comedy in 1992.

He said: "His passing has come as a huge shock to his many friends and work colleagues. What comes over clearly is how respected Vince was, not only as an actor but as a funny, sensitive and caring human being."

His agent Claire Murray, of Brennan Artists, described him as "a hugely respected actor within the Scottish theatre, TV and film community."

She added: "There has been an outpouring of love from actors, directors, writers, creatives and crew who admired his work as a gifted actor and loved him as a gentle, kind, warmhearted friend with a fantastic wit and humour."

In Restless Natives, directed by Michael Hoffman, Mr Friell played one half of a modern highwayman duo robbing coaches in the Highlands.

Later roles included the father of Kelly Macdonald's character Diane in Trainspotting, a property developer seeking to take over the Clansman pub in sitcom Still Game and two roles in Taggart.

He is survived by his wife Alana and their two children.
