One of the few roads to cross the mainline railway to and from Brighton station will be closed for at least 18 weeks for repairs.

Brighton and Hove City Council closed Dyke Road Drive on 29 April to allow repairs to the pavement and kerbs and a parapet wall.

Access over the railway bridge will not be possible during the road closure, which is expected to be until the end of August.

Trevor Muten, council cabinet member for transport, said: "These works are needed to make Dyke Road Drive safer for the whole community."

Parts of the parapet wall need to be completely removed and rebuilt during the works and part of the pavement needs to be relaid.

The council is also using the road closure to fix nearby walkways and kerbs.

The closure is likely to impact parents and pupils needing access to reach Stanford Infant and Junior schools, Windlesham School and Nursery and the Cardinal Newman Catholic School.

The nearest east-west crossings are under the bridges in The Drove, to the north, and by the traffic lights where Old Shoreham Road meets New England Road, to the south.
