Man who fled UK after ambush killing found guilty
A man who fled the country after playing a "leading role" in a fatal stabbing has been found guilty of murder.
Richard Hopley was ambushed by a gang and knifed in the chest while trying to drive away from a group of robbers in Birmingham, police said.
The 43-year-old victim had been driving around a drug dealer and was attacked after arriving in Underwood Close, Edgbaston - a pre-agreed location.
A jury at Birmingham Crown Court convicted Mohammed Qasim on Monday for the killing and conspiracy to rob.
Following the attack in September 2022, Mr Hopley managed to drive for half a mile before collapsing at the wheel and crashing the car in Metchley Lane where he was confirmed dead at the scene.
Qasim, 24, was identified by West Midlands Police as being a prime attacker and was arrested at the airport on his return to the UK last autumn.
The 24-year-old of St Saviours Road, Saltley, is the third man to be convicted for Mr Hopley's murder.
Nicholas Stallard and Paul Hayles were jailed for more than 20 years combined for manslaughter last year.
Det Insp Jim Mahon said: "We understand another man was also part of the ambush and these inquiries continue. Our thoughts remain with Mr Hopley's family and friends."
Qasim is due to be sentenced on Friday.
