Thousands of dead eels found on Jersey beach

Thousands of eels have been found dead on a Jersey beach.

The creatures were discovered on St Ouen's beach on Wednesday.

Francis Binney, head of marine resources at Infrastructure and Environment, said it was not a concern for the government.

He said: “The sand eels likely died from deoxygenating or drying out in the sand ripples in the bay with the outgoing tide."

He added: "Although there are large numbers this year, this is not an unusual occurrence.”
