A driver has been summonsed to court after police officers discovered a toddler asleep on a passenger's knee in a car waiting at a red light.

Lancashire Police said the incident occurred in Blackburn on Monday, when the vehicle pulled up alongside officers, who were in a marked car.

Neither the passenger nor driver were wearing seatbelts.

They told officers the child had been taken out of her car seat because she had cried, an action the force said was "unacceptable".

'Seriously injured'

Officers wrote on X: "Traffic officer in a fully marked car sat at a red light in Blackburn, shocked to see a car pull up alongside him. Empty car seat, driver no seatbelt, rear seat passenger no seatbelt with a 1yr old child across her lap asleep all because she cried. Unacceptable. Summoned to court."
